10 Sochi Olympic gold medalists will receive "Meteorite Medals"



Ten lucky Sochi Olympic gold medalists will also receive a bonus medal decorated with a piece of the giant meteor that hit Russia, a year ago.

Feb. 16 Update: 
The International Olympic Committee nixed the plans for handing out the special meteorite medallions during the medal ceremonies on Saturday. It appears the IOC has very stringent rules regarding how these presentations are carried out and that no items, other than the official awards, may be presented. Reports indicate that the athletes may receive them in a separate ceremony at a later date.

(VIDEO) Yuzuru Hanyu wins gold at the Men's Figure Skating



At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Hanyu broke his own world record in the men's short program, scoring 101.45 points. He is the only skater to score over 100 in the SP. Hanyu obtained 178.64 points in the free program and won Japan's first Olympic gold medal in men's singles.

Out of Medal Position
Despite of being on top, on the first part of the competition. Michael is out of medal position after the performances of Jeremy Abbott (USA), Jorik Hendricx (Belgium), Misha Ge (Uzbekistan) and Florent Amodio (France).

Michael Christian Martinez, the first figure skater from a tropical country, in the Sochi Olympics

Michael Christian Martinez will skate 5th in the Men's Short Program.

"I feel proud because there are a lot of people that say that because we're a tropical country, we can't do this or we can't do that," Martinez told NBCOlympics.com.

"But what I say to them is them is that I'll be the first one to skate in the Olympics. I’m proud of that."
