One of the World's Worst Jobs

Janitor at a Porno Theatre

Janitor, in itself, is a pretty bad job. But, porno theater janitor is the worst job on the list. The main responsibility of the porno theater janitor is to take his mop and rag and wide up after each show is finished. Unlike a traditional theater, it's safe to assume that sticky substance under the chair is something other than Coca-Cola Classic! At least you get to see all that porn for free and you'll probably be very popular among your male friends, although this is probably not a job you want to talk about with your mother, or your wife for that matter. A ‘mother lode’ of ‘new worlds’ have been discovered outside the solar system, with Nasa confirming the existence of 715 new planets.

The US space agency doubled the number of planets known to humanity in just one day after the discovery ‘bonanza’.

Nasa called the new finds a major step toward the planet-hunting Kepler telescope’s ultimate goal of ‘finding Earth 2.0.’

‘The Kepler team continues to amaze and excite us with their planet hunting results,’ explained Nasa veteran John Grunsfeld.

‘That these new planets and solar systems look somewhat like our own, portends a great future when we have the James Webb Space Telescope in space to characterise the new worlds.’

The video shows whale watchers in Baja California, Mexico marveling at the whales which are very close to their boat.

The tour guides can be heard telling people to be careful of the whale's tail, as the curious creature approaches the boat.

Then the whale appears to lift its tail and hit the group with it, the fin collides with one woman in particular, as the group nervously laugh and scream.

The video was posted on YouTube, with this description, "we went whale watching on the Baja this weekend and unfortunately, Chelsea got smacked in the head by a whale's tail.

"Luckily, she was fine and we got it on video!"

An extreme animal sure to survive the apocalypse

If we've learned anything from science class, it's that nature is constantly trying to kill us. No matter how hard it tries though, it will never take down this animal.

The Tardigrade
The Tardigrade

Can survive: Basically anything.

These millimeter long, segmented animals can survive just about everything. Temperatures between just above absolute zero and 300 degrees Fahrenheit are no problem. 1200 times atmospheric pressure? The tardigrade just shrugs it off. It doesn’t really care about dehydration either, seeing as it can go 10 years without water. 1,000 times the lethal dose of radiation for humans is another non-factor. When testing the true extent of the tardigrade's resilience, scientists went so far as to send it to outer space in 2007. The result? Most of the tardigrades that went on the mission came back entirely unscathed. Plus they're kind of weirdly adorable.

A Northern California couple out walking their dog in February 2013 on their Gold Country property stumbled across a modern-day bonanza: $10million in rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree.

Nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition, said David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which recently authenticated them.

Although the face value of the gold pieces only adds up to about $27,000, some of them are so rare that coin experts say they could fetch nearly $1million apiece.

'I don't like to say once-in-a-lifetime for anything, but you don't get an opportunity to handle this kind of material, a treasure like this, ever,' said veteran numismatist Don Kagin, who is representing the finders. 'It's like they found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.'

Smog chokes China as public, experts demand change

"More forceful measures need to be taken," said Ma Jun, a leading voice on China's environment.

BEIJING – China banned outdoor school sports and cookouts as it grappled with a fourth straight day of thick, choking smog, a pollution problem that a recent report says makes Beijing "barely suitable" for living.

Beijing maintained its orange pollution alert Monday, the second-highest level of an official warning and response system introduced nationwide last October. The city has been spraying streets with water to reduce dust in a severe smog attack that has made the Chinese capital's pollution 10 times the level considered safe by the World Health Organization.

"More forceful measures need to be taken," said Ma Jun, a leading voice on China's environmental crisis and director of the Beijing-based Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs.

Other areas in north and central China have been blighted by smog for days. A report by the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences concluded that the Chinese capital was "barely suitable" for living.

Ma said the government should ground its huge vehicle fleet and be prepared to take half of all cars off the streets as China did to bring back blue skies during the 2008 Summer Olympics.

If officials ever announce the "red" top-level alert, half of Beijing's cars are supposed to be automatically grounded.

The reliance on cheap high-sulfur coal as China's chief energy source and a lack of clean-coal technology are blamed for the extraordinary pollution plaguing China cities.

Ma welcomed a recent government agreement to disclose discharges by certain plants but noted that having tough laws on the books does not matter if they are ignored by authorities, as has been the case.

"Beijing has a huge budget to deal with the problem, but I am troubled by the gaps in our management system such as weak enforcement, so factories can still break discharge standards, even in these days," he said.

Beijing has not only shuttered barbecues but also restricted production output at factories and power plants.

In Hebei province, where smog from heavy industry drifts to adjacent Beijing, officials have begun demolishing expendable plants in polluting industries such as concrete. Despite its distinction as China's most polluted province, Hebei hopes to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games along with Beijing.

A top government adviser in China said the country must aggressively cut its reliance on coal, according to Bloomberg.

"China's pollution is at an unbearable stage," Li Junfeng, director general of the National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation, said in Beijing. "It's like a smoker who needs to quit smoking at once; otherwise, he will risk getting lung cancer."

Every morning, Zhang Lequn, mother of a 9-year-old girl, checks her iPhone apps for the latest warnings on Beijing's air quality.

"I really wish we could move to places like Hainan province," an island in the South China Sea, said Zhang, 35, who notes that the U.S. Embassy's online air pollution reading is usually higher than the Chinese government statistic, as it was Monday.

"I'd rather believe the worse one," she said.

The oldest rock ever found on Earth is a zircon crystal

zircon crystal
A zircon crystal found north of Perth in 1999 has been dated to 4.374 billion years, confirming it as the oldest rock ever found on Earth.

A tiny gem found on an outback sheep station in Western Australia has been declared the oldest known piece of our planet.

The zircon is said to be 4.4billion years old and was found by geoscience professor John Valley from the University of Wisconsin in the United States.

"It's so small you could hardly see it with a human eye. It's about the size of two human hairs," Prof. Valley said.

He was on a field trip to an area called Jack Hills about 600km north of Perth in 2001 when he found the specimen. It's an area known for its ancient gem stones which date back to when the Earth's temperatures cooled and formed a crust.

'The first 600-million years of Earth history was thought to be hell like, the surface was covered with molten rock with temperatures around 1000C,' he said.

Prof. Valley said the zircon was formed when the Earth had cooled sufficiently to form a crust.

Michael Christian Martinez's mom did not answer the home mortgage question

Michael Christian Martinez of the Philippines
Mommy Ma. Teresa Martinez, POC official Maria Calaguas, Coach Viktor Kudryavtsev and Michael Martinez.

Ma. Teresa Martinez, mother of Filipino Olympian figure skater Michael Christian Martinez, did not respond Sunday evening to a press conference question on the reported mortgaging of their house to raise funds for her son's Olympic quest.

The question was posed during the homecoming event for Michael beside the ice skating rink of the SM Mall of Asia, but Mrs. Martinez, after conferring with and assisted by the two lady emcees of the event, stayed silent after the emcees made the presscon “move on to the next question.”

The conversation between Mrs. Martinez and the emcees was off-mike and could not be heard by the journalists and general public gathered at the mall.

In The Catholic Register article, which ran last January, Michael’s mother was quoted as saying that "My house is mortgaged. It's a crazy investment.”

Contrary to reports on other websites, The Catholic Register article did not specifically state if the proceeds of the mortgage were in fact used to fund her son’s training expenses, or their trip to Sochi.

The quotes by Michael's mother however led to a slew of articles based on the presumption that the mortgage money was used to pay for the mother and son's trip to Sochi, Russia.

An inquiry with the Muntinlupa City Assessor’s Office and Registry of Deeds however revealed that there are no such mortgages recorded on the titles of the family's two properties in that area.

According to Vincent Charles Albert Misa, Chief Appraiser of the Muntinlupa City Assessors office, Maria Teresa Martinez, mother of Michael, is listed as the owner of two properties in Pleasant Village, Muntinlupa - one on Peninsula Avenue, and another on Regent Avenue.

Registry of Deeds examiner Lucy Manalo, stated that the two lots owned by the Martinez matriarch were mortgaged to Export Bank on September 16, 1998, but both were subsequently canceled in November 15, 2005. The two properties of the Martinezes have had clean titles for eight years. Continue reading...

BARCELONA, Spain — Sony has launched the 10.1-inch Xperia Z2 Tablet, packing some serious power into an ultra-thin, waterproof case.

The Xperia Z2 Tablet is truly razor thin, especially for a tablet — only 6.4mm. For comparison, that's thinner than the company's own Xperia Z1, which is 8.5mm thick, as well as the 7.6mm iPhone 5S and the 7.4mm iPad Air.

It's also very light — 426g for the Wi-Fi model and 439g for the LTE/3G model — but Sony nevertheless managed to stuff very powerful hardware into it. The specs include a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB of RAM (yes, that's basically the same as the company's freshly unveiled flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z2), an 8.1-megapixel camera, a 6000mAh battery and a full HD screen.

PHL has poorest, slowest LTE broadband in the world — int'l survey

Internet Speeds and Costs Around the World
Internet Speeds and Costs Around the World
After the controversy over data caps imposed by Globe Telecom and Smart Communications, another issue is hounding giant telcos in the Philippines, this time with Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard in the mobile network technology, also known as 4G.

A survey by OpenSignal, a company that created impartial coverage maps of mobile networks, showed that the Philippines has the poorest and slowest LTE broadband internet access and coverage in the world.

'Worst performing network'

Six million users from around the world were asked to comment on download speed and proportion of time spent with LTE access during the second half of 2013. These two matrices were then combined to “build a picture of true network performance.”

Both Smart and Globe were classified under “Poor coverage and slow” in the quadrant graph entitled The Breadth of LTE Performance.

“Globe Philippines is the worst performing network,” the OpenSignal article said.

The graph showed that while Globe was said to be faster than Smart, it was used less often compared to the latter.

The Philippines is also last place when it comes to both speed and time spent on LTE.

“Actually, nagpaalam!

Aniya, “Sa Villa Quintana kasi as long as pagdating ng March wala na akong ie-air doon sa kabila.”

The Philippines can lose P6 billion everyday due to traffic congestion

Metro Manila traffic
Metro Manila traffic

The Philippine economy can lose as much as P6 billion every day by 2030 due to traffic congestion in key cities, specifically in Metro Manila, according to the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

According to JICA project manager, Shizuo Iwata, transport losses in the Philippines in 2012 only amounts to P2.4 billion in 2012 but will continue to rise if not given proper attention.

“Metro Manila is losing competitiveness due to transportation congestion,” Iwata said, suggesting that the government develop more efficient public mass transport systems, like railways.

Iwata compared the current situation in the Philippines to more sophisticated countries where railway share in the transport system far exceeds what the country has.

“In Tokyo, about 62 percent is the share of the railway system in public transport ,”he said in his reports.

Iwata said ideally the railway system in the Philippines should ideally cover about 41 percent of the total public transport mix. “Jeepney or bus at 33 percent while cars will be 26 percent,”he said in his report. Continue reading...

Researchers have created a substance designed to help wounds heal faster

A 'glue' engineered to allow faster healing of wounds.

It may sound like something out of "Asimov's Science Fiction" magazine, but researchers in Switzerland have created a substance designed to help wounds heal faster, from minor cuts to broken bones, reports LiveScience.

The substance, referred to as "engineered growth factor," works by "remaining near the damaged tissue longer than it normally would."

Growth factors are defined as proteins produced naturally by animals. These factors have a variety of uses in the body, from contributing to fetal development to healing skin gashes and broken bones. When the body is injured, growth factors signal certain cells to surround the wound and promote healing.

While growth factors are essential in the healing of wounds, it is difficult to get such proteins to "stick where they are needed." Long-lasting, engineered "glue" could subsequently benefit those with chronic wounds stemming from diabetes or immune system deficiencies.

Studies were conducted on mutant mice with genetic defects making it difficult for wounds to heal. The substance was applied to new wounds on the mice, signaling cells to help heal the damage, and quickly. Its ability to stay put means it could be applied to injuries in much smaller doses, with scientists able to use amounts "up to 250 times smaller" than any such substance used previously.
