Blood Moon 2: The Total Lunar Eclipse of the Heart 2014

If you were lucky enough to experience the awesome astronomical event that turned the evening sky into reddish-orange called the Blood Moon.

This Total Lunar Eclipse is 2nd in a rare phenomenon called Tetrad. A four consecutive total eclipses with no partial eclipses in between. The next on this series, which is the 3rd is on April 4, 2015 and then the last one will be on September 28, 2015.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes within Earth's umbra (shadow). As the eclipse begins, the Earth's shadow first darkens the Moon slightly. Then, the shadow begins to "cover" part of the Moon, turning it a dark red-brown color (typically - the color can vary based on atmospheric conditions). The Moon appears to be reddish because of Rayleigh scattering (the same effect that causes sunsets to appear reddish) and the refraction of that light by the Earth's atmosphere into its umbra. When the Moon travels completely into the Earth's umbra, one observes a total lunar eclipse. Source

Crocodile chases swimming tourist In Mexico

A video by Penny Horcher on YouTube
Hungry croc chases unsuspecting swimmer in Mexico

Heart-stopping video has emerged of a naïve swimmer frantically trying to reach the shore as a large crocodile takes chase in Mexico.

The amateur footage shows the adrenalin-charged young male making a beeline for dry land, as panicked tourists on the overhanging Boca Paila bridge in Sian Ka'an watch on in terror.

Just as the metres-long crocodile - believed to be an American crocodile - looks like it is closing in, a quick-thinking observer intervenes, throwing an object at the creature and stopping it in its tracks.

Manuel Carrera, who captured the video "not long ago", said locals dared not enter the waters for fear of enticing the male crocodile, which feeds off food left by tourists and fishermen.

However, the swimmer seemed oblivious to the danger.
"Unfortunately, that crocodile already associated us with food and as the video shows the boy was saved because the crocodile is well fed and chased at a pace that allowed him to reach the shore," he said.

Mr Carrera said he hoped the footage would serve as a warning to others and urged tourists to refrain from feeding the wildlife.

Washington: Scientists have reportedly come up with a plan that would use lasers to remove orbiting space debris.

The Australian government has announced a 20 million dollars Cooperative Research Centre that will investigate using lasers to locate, track, and remove debris from space.

According to Cnet, researchers believe that at least several hundred thousand pieces of space debris are stuck out in orbit around the planet, creating hazards for satellites and spacecraft.

Matthew Colless, director of the Australian National University Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Mount Stromlo said that everywhere humans have been in space, they leave some trash behind.

Colless said that the project intends to clean up space to avoid the growing risks of collisions and to make sure we don't have the kind of event portrayed in 'Gravity'.

Missing woman unwittingly joins search party looking for herself

A group of tourists spent hours Saturday night looking for a missing woman near Iceland's Eldgja canyon, only to find her among the search party.

The group was travelling through Iceland on a tour bus and stopped near the volcanic canyon in the southern highlands Saturday afternoon, reports the Icelandic news organization mbl.is.

One of the women on the bus left to change her clothes and freshen up. When she came back, her busmates didn't recognize her.

Soon, there was word of a missing passenger. The woman didn't recognize the description of herself, and joined in the search.

About 50 people searched the terrain by vehicles and on foot. The coast guard was even readying a helicopter to help.

But the search was called off at about 3 a.m., when it became clear the missing woman was, in fact, accounted for and searching for herself.

PHL to upgrade navy base nearest to Spratlys

 Spratlys
Credit: www.aurorametropolis.wordpress.com
The Philippines is to upgrade a navy base facing disputed South China Sea waters to serve the extra ships being acquired to protect its territory, the military said Thursday.

Navy spokesman Lt. Commander Gregory Fabic said the military will build a P500-million ($11.2 million) port at Ulugan Bay, the Philippine military base nearest to the Spratly Islands.

"It is being programmed for capability upgrade... we need to develop it to house the big vessels of the navy," he told reporters.

President Benigno Aquino is set to visit the base on May 20 to launch the upgrading, Fabic added.

The base on the west coast of Palawan island is the headquarters of naval forces guarding the waters on the west of the archipelago.

In recent years, the Philippines has been locked in an increasingly tense standoff with China involving disputed reefs and islands in the Spratlys and other areas of the South China Sea.

Under a program designed to improve the capability of one of Asia's weakest military forces, the Philippines has been acquiring naval vessels to create what the government described as a "credible deterrent" to protect its territorial integrity.

The navy has acquired two refurbished American coast guard frigates in the past two years, and they now lead patrols in the South China Sea.

The navy wants to acquire up to six more to guard the country's long coastline effectively, armed forces chief of staff General Emmanuel Bautista announced in January.

In 2012 the Gregorio del Pilar, one of the two refurbished frigates, confronted Chinese ships on Scarborough Shoal, a small outcrop just off the coast of the country's main island of Luzon.

The Chinese eventually gained control of the outcrop after Manila backed down. However, the Manila government sought UN arbitration to settle the dispute, a move rejected by China.

Last month the Philippines lodged a protest after the Chinese coast guard allegedly attacked Filipino fishermen off the shoal with water cannon on January 27. Beijing rejected the protest.
