Michael Christian Martinez's mom did not answer the home mortgage question

Ma. Teresa Martinez, mother of Filipino Olympian figure skater Michael Christian Martinez, did not respond Sunday evening to a press conference question on the reported mortgaging of their house to raise funds for her son's Olympic quest.
The question was posed during the homecoming event for Michael beside the ice skating rink of the SM Mall of Asia, but Mrs. Martinez, after conferring with and assisted by the two lady emcees of the event, stayed silent after the emcees made the presscon “move on to the next question.”
The conversation between Mrs. Martinez and the emcees was off-mike and could not be heard by the journalists and general public gathered at the mall.
In The Catholic Register article, which ran last January, Michael’s mother was quoted as saying that "My house is mortgaged. It's a crazy investment.”
Contrary to reports on other websites, The Catholic Register article did not specifically state if the proceeds of the mortgage were in fact used to fund her son’s training expenses, or their trip to Sochi.
The quotes by Michael's mother however led to a slew of articles based on the presumption that the mortgage money was used to pay for the mother and son's trip to Sochi, Russia.
An inquiry with the Muntinlupa City Assessor’s Office and Registry of Deeds however revealed that there are no such mortgages recorded on the titles of the family's two properties in that area.
According to Vincent Charles Albert Misa, Chief Appraiser of the Muntinlupa City Assessors office, Maria Teresa Martinez, mother of Michael, is listed as the owner of two properties in Pleasant Village, Muntinlupa - one on Peninsula Avenue, and another on Regent Avenue.
Registry of Deeds examiner Lucy Manalo, stated that the two lots owned by the Martinez matriarch were mortgaged to Export Bank on September 16, 1998, but both were subsequently canceled in November 15, 2005. The two properties of the Martinezes have had clean titles for eight years. Continue reading...

MANILA, Philippines–The SM group is set to honor winter Olympian and homegrown skating rink talent Michael Martinez as he comes home from a much-lauded performance at the Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia.
SM – in whose mall Martinez learned skating – is set to organize a motorcade at the Mall of Asia on Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. which will culminate in an awarding ceremony inside the mall, SM Prime Holdings said in a press statement on Thursday.
The company, which has contributed to Martinez’ athletic pursuits, is likewise preparing “surprise” gifts for the Olympian.
"We are very proud of Michael. Not only did he give honor to our country, but he is also a shining example for the youth as someone who saw no limits to what he can achieve. He has already inspired millions by following his dreams and by competing in the Winter Olympics. He will continue to inspire us all as he works towards earning medals in the future Olympic competitions," SM Prime Holdings president Hans Sy said. Continue reading...

Feb. 16 Update:
The International Olympic Committee nixed the plans for handing out the special meteorite medallions during the medal ceremonies on Saturday. It appears the IOC has very stringent rules regarding how these presentations are carried out and that no items, other than the official awards, may be presented. Reports indicate that the athletes may receive them in a separate ceremony at a later date.
